Of ballet’s many productions of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, this one is the grandest. Kenneth MacMillan choreographed it, with scenery and costume designs by Nicholas Georgiadis, for the Royal Ballet in 1965. And with Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn cast as the lovers—pandemonium! Twenty years later, the production was staged by the American Ballet Theatre; on opening night, the leads were Robert La Fosse and Leslie Browne (in the 1977 movie The Turning Point, Browne performs part of the balcony scene with Mikhail Baryshnikov). Since then, MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet has never been long out of ABT repertory. This week, seven performances of the ballet—each with a different pair of lovers—cap the ABT summer season at Lincoln Center. Our picks: the July 19 matinee cast of Catherine Hurlin and Calvin Royal III, and the evening of July 22 with Cassandra Trenary and Herman Cornejo. —Laura Jacobs
