Amedeo Modigliani wouldn’t be famous today if it weren’t for his art dealer Paul Guillaume, who rented him a studio in Montmartre, sold his paintings, and helped him through his ups and downs. After Modigliani met the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, in 1909, he took up sculpture, to which he devoted himself almost exclusively until 1914. It was when he met the 23-year-old Guillaume that he went back to painting the elongated figures that brought him international acclaim. The artist died in 1920, after years suffering from tuberculosis, which he exacerbated with alcohol and drug use. This show explores the relationship between the artist and his dealer. —Elena Clavarino
