A four-year study of the Menil Collection’s holdings in Surrealism inspired the San Juan sculptors Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla to create “Specters of Noon,” a mystical installation. Drawn to the word acedia—which comes from early Christian texts and describes a demon that overtakes the soul during the listless noon hour—Allora and Calzadilla have attempted to create a state of overbright uncertainty within the Menil’s main building. Yellow shapes in polyvinyl and paint float around the gallery space, while sounds and recordings reverberate, hypnotizing the air. The exhibition will conclude with a series of live performances, composed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning David Lang, and led by chorus master Donald Nally. —E.C.
