“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then,” says Alice in Lewis Carroll’s creation of 1865, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It is statements like these—loony in the moment, ever so deep when you take the time to think about them—that propelled Carroll’s book to worldwide fame. Highlights in a new show about the evergreen story include Carroll’s original handwritten manuscript, Salvador Dalí’s 1969 painting A Mad Tea Party, Joseph McHugh’s psychedelic poster of the Cheshire Cat, and costumes by Bob Crowley for the Royal Ballet’s 2011 full-length adaptation of the tale. —J.V.
