Albrecht Altdorfer, a German Renaissance Master

Oct 1, 2020 – Jan 4, 2021
Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris, France

Despite working with renowned figures such as Lucas Cranach the Elder, Wolf Huber, and Hans Baldung Grien, the German Renaissance master Albrecht Altdorfer has languished in the shadows. The Louvre aims to change that. Altdorfer was one of the first painters to regularly use landscape as an expressive and even phantasmagorical component in his richly-colored biblical and historical scenes. The Louvre retrospective sheds light on Altdorfer’s full body of work, which also includes architectural studies and intricate etchings. —E.C.
