A special spotlight tucked among Frieze London’s gallery sections is the Frieze Artist Award—an opportunity for emerging artists to debut ambitious commissions. This year’s winner, Alberta Whittle, was selected from a group of eight nominated artists. “Whittle’s winning proposal is a moving-image work that explores timely questions,” explains Frieze London’s artistic director, Eva Langret, “relating to personal healing and the cultivation of hope in hostile environments; be it the pandemic, colonialism, or xenophobia.” During this year’s Frieze week, Whittle’s winning video commission will be on view at Forma’s new cultural hub in South London. —E.C.
