After the Mediterranean

A detail from Huniti Goldox’s 2023 Rising Up From Halite.

Apr 2 – Oct 29, 2023

The Mediterranean may be more closely associated with la belle vie than any other body of water. A classic Slim Aarons photo jumps to mind: girls lounging on wooden speedboats, heading home from the beach in the South of France. Or think of a pasta dinner on the cliffs of Capri, blue above, below, and all around. As climate change beckons, the curator, writer, and art researcher Oriol Fontdevila asks, “What representations will replace the idea of a bucolic sea?” On a small islet just off the coast of Mahon, and looking to art for an answer to her question, he’s grouped together artists from Spain, Albania, Morocco, and other countries along the Mediterranean. Laia Estruch, Erola Arcalís, Omar Mismar, and Abi Shehu are among those included. —Elena Clavarino
