Ever since the early–20th century, protests and acts of resistance have been duly documented by photographers. Periods of turmoil, however, often stay in collective consciousness through one powerful image. Think of Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother, a matriarchal image that became an emblem of the Great Depression, or Steve McCurry’s Afghan Girl, which has come to symbolize the Soviet–Afghan war. “Acts of Resistance,” opening on Women’s Day, explores the last 10 years of feminist activism across the globe, and includes the photography of Nan Goldin, Teresa Margolles, and Zanele Muholi, among others. —Elena Clavarino
