“What do I want to express?” the French-Moroccan artist Hassan Hajjaj once asked himself. “And I just thought, what’s around me, be truthful. I don’t want to be a really intellectual artist because the work is for the people.” In this exhibition, Hajjaj’s photographic portraiture—cultural mashups in pop art colors—is presented as an antidote for fear of the future. And in a new series executed in his signature style, Moroccan cultural symbols are framed by bright tins, bottles, cans, and toys. The atmosphere is one of joyful integration. —E.C.
