When Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun debuted on Broadway in 1959, it was considered a gamble. The play is set in Chicago on the South Side and tells the story of the Younger family, at odds over what to do with a $10,000 insurance benefit. The risky part, according to skeptics, was that the cast had only one role for a white actor. The risk paid off—the show was a hit. A contemporary twist on the classic now comes to the Public Theater. The production is helmed by Robert O’Hara, who recently won a Tony for his direction of Slave Play. —Jensen Davis
