“What I’ve tried to do is to create a high style to describe low things,” Martin Amis once told The New York Times Book Review. Amis, who died in 2023, at 73, used big words and elegant phrasing but was always witheringly funny—even when, in acclaimed novels like Money, London Fields, and The Zone of Interest, he discussed everything from London’s darkest streets to the Nazi atrocities. Members of his cohort—Salman Rushdie, Jeffrey Eugenides, Jennifer Egan, Lorrie Moore, and others—are now getting together to discuss how he remade English letters in the 1980s, and how they met him, talked books with him, partied with him. —Elena Clavarino
