Calling Mstyslav Chernov a journalist is an understatement. In the genres of photography, reporting, documentary, and fiction his contributions to war coverage are astounding and prolific. Born in 1985, in Kharkiv, Chernov was covering Eastern European conflicts long before the outbreak of the Russo-Ukraine War. But once it began, it became his primary focus. In early 2022, Chernov documented three weeks spent in Ukraine during Russia’s siege of Mariupol. He and his colleagues could not have been closer to the action—in fact, they were a part of it. His footage became 20 Days in Mariupol, a haunting chronicle of a major city devolving into a war zone. Film Forum is screening the film and hosting Chernov himself. He will introduce 20 Days in Mariupol and then follow up with Q&A session. —Jack Sullivan
