That Was Then An airline could do worse than to hire Marlene Dietrich to demonstrate its cabin’s expansive legroom. But BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) took it one step further and stuck her—and those million-dollar legs, as insured by Paramount—in economy for this 1965 ad. In a later version, it replaced the actress’s racy heels with a pair of sensible loafers. Because of Dietrich’s anti-Nazi stance during W.W. II, the ads never ran in Germany. —Linda Wells June 7, 2024 Photo: Keystone Pictures USA/Keystone Press/Alamy
