Stanley Whitney: Paintings on Paper

Stanley Whitney, Untitled, 2017.

Dec 19, 2022 – Jan 28, 2023
Promenade 79, 3780 Gstaad, Switzerland

“Color has great depth,” the artist Stanley Whitney has said, “it can bring up great emotion and immense feeling.” Whitney lives and works in both New York City and Parma, Italy. He paints exuberant grids in endless variations, filling canvases with seemingly simple squares of color organized by straight lines. His work is informed by both jazz and quilt making, and also by his idols Piet Mondrian, Giorgio Morandi, and Charlie Parker. Whitney’s gouaches on paper, made over a seven-year period, are the subject of this exhibition. Far from being mere experiments, these vibrant paintings shed light on the process that guides this spirited artist. —Elena Clavarino
