More is more—at least at the table. After years of white ceramics, pale linens, and the sort of glassware that doesn’t say much, the maximalist table is back: patterned plates, printed linens, colored glass, mismatched china, and enough personality to make a home-cooked weekday dinner for four feel like a festive event.

The look is not exactly new. What is new is the enthusiasm for abandoning the idea that everything needs to match. Designers are layering florals with stripes, colored glass with painted porcelain, and old pieces with new ones. The result is less “tablescape” and more table, one that looks as though it has accumulated over time rather than arrived in a box. The old rules about matching have become considerably more relaxed.
