Clothing prices are through the roof! Airfare is stratospheric! And don’t even get me started on the news: horrific! Gasping under this relentless gloom and doom, I decide to beat a hasty retreat into the delightful world of fine jewelry, where troubles will vanish in the haze as I gaze into the heart of a single stellar diamond, or laugh at a candy necklace, or wreath my neck with pretty golden chains.

I settled on a visit to Madison Avenue, where a host of new jewelry shops have recently opened.
