That ivory, cropped silk-cloqué Alaïa jacket and matching slit skirt the Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink wore in May ahead of the season opener against the Las Vegas Aces wasn’t pulled from the six-foot-four player’s closet—it was deftly styled by Shiona Turini. The Bermuda-born stylist has moved through nearly every corner of fashion, from public relations at YSL and editorial roles at W, Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and CR Fashion Book to the styling teams behind Beyoncé’s Renaissance and Cowboy Carter world tours. Her turn to the rapidly growing style arena that is the Women’s National Basketball Association, however, is a recent one.
“I [hadn’t] really worked with an athlete, and I [had] never worked with a woman as tall as her,” says Turini of Brink. “When I took the call, I just fell in love with her. She was so open and excited and ready to explore and evolve in the fashion space.” This season, the pair have aimed to achieve Brink’s signature sexy, feminine aesthetic while being mindful of the fact that she’s often photographed shortly before tip-off. “She wants to present herself to the world in a certain way, but she still needs to keep her head in the game,” Turini adds. “I like being a piece of that puzzle.”
