The Holy Trinity? With all respect, there are two. There’s that one—of Christian salvation and Don McLean. And there’s the Holy Trinity of a different calling, Ralph, Calvin, and Donna (that’s Lauren, Klein, and Karan, for Strunk and White sticklers), the sacred triumvirate that arrived to fashion in the late 1960s and within a decade gave American fashion its own identity, independent of the European canon.
Today, only Ralph Lauren, the man and the brand, resides at the forefront of the global luxury industry. Klein and Karan sold their companies years ago. He ultimately left fashion; she now focuses on her niche, philanthropically oriented Urban Zen collection and foundation.
