To create her collections, Silvia Tcherassi often draws inspiration from her native country. “[Gabriel] García Márquez taught us that the ordinary can become extraordinary, a concept I incorporate into my designs,” she told Women’s Wear Daily in September. “Similarly, Fernando Botero’s approach to volume, scale and color invites experimentation.”

Born in Barranquilla, on Colombia’s northern coast, Tcherassi frequently blends Latin culture with Caribbean history in her eclectic designs, characterized by bold prints and refined silhouettes. Since launching her eponymous label in 1987, she has achieved many firsts. In 2003, she became the first Latin American designer to participate in Milan Fashion Week, and in 2004, the first to present in Paris, following an invitation by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode. Today, she has 11 stores worldwide, with her collections available everywhere from Saks Fifth Avenue to Moda Operandi. Here, the Colombian designer shares her favorite spots in the charming port city, where she opened the Tcherassi Hotel + Spa in 2009.
