When Zélika García founded the Zona Maco art fair in 2003, Mexico City was not yet recognized internationally as the cosmopolitan hub it is today. English is now a common sound in neighborhoods like Roma Norte and Condesa, which are magnets for North American tourists. Yet Mexico and its capital boast a long, rich artistic heritage as well as a contemporary art scene that began to flourish in the 1990s. García was visionary, promoting the growing movement early on by spotlighting 40 local galleries. More than two decades later, she’s still leading the charge. Zona Marco is now the largest art fair in Latin America, hosting 208 exhibitors from 25 countries this year. As Patricia Ortiz Monasterio, the co-founder of Mexico City’s Galería OMR, told The Art Newspaper, “Zélika knew how to read a moment and brought together the key players at the time.” This year, the Cuban curator Direlia Lazo takes the helm as artistic director, succeeding Juan Canela. —Jeanne Malle
