The London-born and Brooklyn-based artist Zoë Buckman is a feminist and makes sure we know it. The pieces in her new exhibition “Bloodwork” focus on survivors, whether of domestic abuse, illness, or hardship. Buckman draws from her own circle of friends and family, and chooses to depict her subjects at moments of joy. She often uses old textiles in her work, embellished with printed or embroidered text. She leaves stains and hanging threads, reminders of the messiness of life. “Creating work where there are incomplete forms,” she said in a 2021 interview with Soft Punk, “where I cannot control the exact formation of the wet ink on the fabric or the ways in which the threads will dangle and even tangle once framed—that’s teaching me how to surrender to what is.” —Clara Molot
