The island of Lamu, Kenya—East Africa’s most preserved Swahili settlement—is described by artist Zipora Fried as “sky and mud colored lizards, soft-toned cicada shells, sunsets echoing exploding worlds.” Like her words, Fried’s pencil work has a dreamy quality. Her choice of color evokes Lamu’s exotic flora and fauna, while gentle strokes suggest a sensory experience. The result? Hovering color spectrums that could be sky, clouds, and creatures. —E.C.
