“If I wait for someone else to validate my existence,” says the acclaimed South African photographer Zanele Muholi, “it will mean that I’m shortchanging myself.” Muholi, who uses the pronouns “they” and “them,” is determined not to be shortchanged. Famous for their striking black-and-white portraits of LGBTQIA+ people, they document the inherent, often forgotten beauty of their country’s most shunned communities. In this exhibition, works from their series “Hail the Lion” present striking figures steeped in traditional styles. Also on view are Muholi’s first large painted portraits—acrylic on canvas—figurative, vibrant, and touched with surrealism. —E.C.
