“For me, there is no distinct sex because people become men or women when they grow up,” explains the Japanese artist Yoshimoto Nara. “Children are more neutral. That is the way I see them.” Nara is famous for cartoon-like depictions of children isolated in monochrome backgrounds—haunting symbols of universality. In this exhibition of 20 works never before exhibited, two are large-scale drawings that date to Nara’s own childhood, from his days at Tobiu Camp in the North of Japan. —E.C.
