Working Together: Louis Draper and the Kamoinge Workshop

Feb 1 – June 14, 2020
200 N Arthur Ashe Blvd, Richmond, VA 23220, United States

In the language of the Kikuyu people of Kenya, the word kamoinge means “a group of people acting and working together.” It’s also the name of a photography collective founded in 1963, a group whose members, talented African-American artists, encouraged one another to break free from societal and racist constraints. In celebrating one of Kamoinge’s founders, the Virginia-born photographer Louis Draper (1935–2002), this exhibition showcases 150 works from the collective. —E.C.
