During the short days of winter, the Southbank Centre radiates light. Each day at dusk, more than 15 illuminated artworks brighten the Centre’s sprawling riverside facade. David Batchelor lights Queen Elizabeth Hall. Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum creates an animated lunar voyage. Emma Talbot embodies freedom with her video projection Birds. The works explore complexities of nature, society, and politics, as well as gender and aesthetics. In addition, newly commissioned writings by Jini Reddy examine the effects of seasonal and cyclical change. —E.C.
