William Eggleston: The Outlands

Nov 10 – Dec 17, 2022
537 W 20th St, New York, NY 10011, United States

A pioneer in the use of color film, William Eggleston had his first major show in 1976, at the Museum of Modern Art. Every major reviewer panned it. “Critics and so forth obviously weren’t really looking at this stuff,” he said in 2016. The rest of his career has continued to prove the critics foolish. Now 83, Eggleston is considered “the godfather of color photography.” At Zwirner, a selection of photos taken between 1970 and 1973 is on view. It includes images that didn’t make it into the 1976 show, and haven’t been exhibited until now. —Jensen Davis
