Welcome to Wrexham, Season 2

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney watch the Wrexham Red Dragons from the stands.

Streaming on Hulu

The popularity of Ted Lasso in the States surprised many. American television audiences aren’t typically soccer fanatics. But the show’s ability to dramatize the pitch for those unconcerned with free kicks and headers was vital for its climb to commercial success. Last year, Welcome to Wrexham premiered with the intention of capitalizing on the Ted Lasso phenomenon. The documentary series follows Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s attempt to drag a fifth-tier football team—the Wrexham AFC Red Dragons—up from the lowest depths of the English leagues. From a fan’s perspective, the premise is intriguing. What happens when two celebrities, who have the ability to draw in unlimited cash from advertisers (allowing them to pay for superior players, training facilities, and so on), funnel their wealth into a last-place club? Well, despite failing to reach promotion during the show’s first season, the Wrexham squad dramatically improved under their new management. Welcome to Wrexham is nothing but fun; Season Two premiered this fall. —Jack Sullivan
