Back in the early 1950s, young Vivian Maier was working as a nanny, first in New York and then in Chicago. Pushing a stroller or exploring the city on her own, she brought her camera along and took pictures. Many pictures! Maier died in 2009, never knowing that her negatives had surfaced in 2007—more than 120,000 of them—or that as her images became known she would be recognized as a pioneer of urban photography. This exhibition focuses on the presence of Maier’s face and shadow in 80 of her photographs. —Elena Clavarino
