“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is a pretty good way to describe Nick Nolte’s approach to acting. Now 82, and with 40 films under his belt, the majority of Nolte’s characters are in line with his off-screen personality. They’re gruff and gritty. Yet despite the tough exterior, we always end up rooting for him. Over the course of two weeks, Metrograph is showing six movies in which he stars. The program, “Up the Nolte,” includes The Prince of Tides and Affliction. These earlier works pair well with 2011’s Warrior, a film that split the critics upon its release, but demonstrated that Nolte—then almost 70—hadn’t slowed with age. —Jack Sullivan
