The deep intuition of artists, when they are at the height of their powers, is frequently a step ahead of science and technology. After all, observation and imagination are implicit to both art and science. In fact, this exhibition at the Herbert suggests that artist-naturalists paved the way for later scientific discoveries. Featuring drawings, paintings, sculpture, installations, and digital media, “UnNatural History” brings the piercing scientific perceptions of artists to the fore. Contemporary artists on the roster include Yinka Shonibare, Wangechi Mutu, and Danh Võ. —E.C.
