Can we lean into the discomfort of our collective history while forging a new path forward? The collective history the Lebanese-American tenor Karim Sulayman is thinking of is that of the Crusades. By way of an answer, he has created a collage using music from Monteverdi, Handel, and the contemporary composer Mary Kouyoumdjian. Though the themes of Unholy Wars are expansive, the scale of the work is intimate, with a cast of just three singers and a dancer and a running time of 70 minutes. —Matthew Gurewitsch
