“And we marched / and we started / ‘No Justice No Peace.’” This is the voice of a community activist—one of many voices in Anna Deavere Smith’s play Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992—recalling the murder of Latasha Harlins by a Korean grocery clerk. Smith’s show details the aftermath of the slaying of Harlins and the brutal beating of Rodney King, and is based on over 350 people she interviewed. Sitting at the nexus of art and politics, Smith’s play is newly timely in the wake of George Floyd’s killing by police in Minneapolis. Originally a one-woman show, Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 is here performed by five actors: Elena Hurst, Wesley T. Jones, Francis Jue, Karl Kenzler and Tiffany Rachelle Stewart. —C.J.F.
