Last year’s Vermeer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, in Amsterdam—which gathered together almost all of the artist’s paintings—broke all kinds of records. In neighboring Belgium, the newly reopened Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp is placing the artist in a different context. The theme of the exhibition is tronie, the old Dutch word for “face,” an important area of study for 16th- and 17th-century artists. This time, however, Vermeer’s faces are shown with those painted by Bruegel, Rubens, Rembrandt, and more. A staggering 76 masterpieces are in the show. —Elena Clavarino
