The documentarian Daniel Roher has covered difficult subjects in his work, among them, the Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, several years before his death. Roher has now made his narrative debut with Tuner, the indie festival darling that Variety called a “throwback to well-written character-driven ’90s dramas like Good Will Hunting.” The film is about Niki (Leo Woodall) and Harry (Dustin Hoffman), piano tuners for rich New Yorkers who never play their instruments but have them for decoration. The story morphs from a laid-back buddy narrative to a full-on heist operation when Niki, who is acutely sensitive to sound, discovers a new skill: safecracking. That knack ultimately turns his life upside down, presenting him with a shady secondary career and a romance. Hoffman is the big ticket name here, but star-making performances by Woodall and Havana Rose Liu anchor the film. —Maggie Turner
