The 1970s and 80s were turbulent decades in Britain. Inflation and unemployment skyrocketed, and strikes, power cuts, and states of emergency were common occurrences. In January 1972, Ireland’s Bloody Sunday rocked the nation. In 1979, when Thatcher was elected prime minister, there was further unrest. Deep division penetrated the country. All the while, photographs documented the calamity, bringing a new popularity to the medium as well as a new generation of artists—among them Martin Parr, Anna Fox, Paul Graham, and Sunil Gupta. The era’s quintessentially British shots are on view in this exhibition. —Elena Clavarino
