Dark doings on the rocky coast of Cornwall. The very busy Louisa Muller directs a new production of Dame Ethel Smyth’s timber-shivering horror story. Patrick Summers conducts the tempestuous score, which at times recalls Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and at others anticipates Britten’s sea-swept Peter Grimes. Sasha Cooke is Thirza, the intense young bride of the much older clergyman whose religion, ethics, and sexual appetite disgust her. Reginald Smith, Jr. is heard as Thirza’s husband, squaring off against Norman Reinhardt as her lover, with whom she shares a watery death. —Matthew Gurewitsch
