The World of Anna Sui

“Whenever people talk about the ‘Anna Sui woman,’” remarked the queen of punk herself, “there’s always like this ambiguity: Is she a good girl, or a bad girl?” Now you can decide for yourself. With more than 100 ensembles divided into 12 themes, “The World of Anna Sui” tells colorful stories of hippie chicks, hula girls, pirate rock stars, and Pre-Raphaelite maidens. This exhibition is bright and fun, but also a serious expression of Anna Sui’s innate historicism. And given that Sui was born in Detroit, Michigan, the show has been treated as a homecoming. “Detroit is a music city, and that influence is visible throughout this exhibition,” says Laura Mott, chief curator at the Cranbrook Art Museum and co-adapter of the exhibition. “Genres of music play a critical role in Anna’s artistic inspirations, from punk and grunge to mod and psychedelic rock. Seeing the exhibition here highlights the cultural environment that helped shape her creative vision.” —Elena Clavarino
