DESCRIPTION:Oct 21\, 2026 - Feb 28\, 2027\n“Whenever people talk about th
e ‘Anna Sui woman\,’” remarked the queen of punk herself\, “there
’s always like this ambiguity: Is she a good girl\, or a bad girl?” No
w you can decide for yourself. With more than 100 ensembles divided into 1
2 themes\, “The World of Anna Sui” tells colorful stories of hippie ch
 icks\, hula girls\, pirate rock stars\, and Pre-Raphaelite maidens. This e
xhibition is bright and fun\, but also a serious expression of Anna Sui’
s innate historicism. And given that Sui was born in Detroit\, Michigan\,
the show has been treated as a homecoming. “Detroit is a music city\, an
d that influence is visible throughout this exhibition\,” says Laura Mot
t\, chief curator at the Cranbrook Art Museum and co-adapter of the exhibi
tion. “Genres of music play a critical role in Anna’s artistic inspira
tions\, from punk and grunge to mod and psychedelic rock. Seeing the exhib
ition here highlights the cultural environment that helped shape her creat
 ive vision.”
