One should always take notice when Robert De Niro returns to the thriller genre. This time, the Hollywood perennial joins Adam Scott, Michael Keaton, and Michelle Monaghan for the large-screen adaptation of Adam North’s 2019 novel The Whisper Man. Directed by James Ashcroft, the film’s protagonist is the widower Tom Kennedy (Scott), a crime writer whose young son is kidnapped. He must enlist help from his estranged father, the retired detective Pete, played by De Niro. The role marks a new chapter in De Niro’s seemingly eternal career (he is now 83). “Especially as you get older, I have less time to waste, so I have to be very careful,” the actor told USA Today. “I have to juggle between family time, doing a project, where it’ll be, and how much time it’ll be. Then I’m able to commit to it fully.” The Netflix original releases on August 28. —Maggie Turner
