The Super Models

Fashion historians agree that the “supermodel” was created on the Versace runway in March 1991. For the finale of his Fall-Winter show, Gianni Versace sent muses Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and Cindy Crawford down the runway in mini dresses, lip synching George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90.” (Months earlier, the women had starred in the music video for the pop hit.) These gals were more than mannequins, their personalities so arresting that the dresses were beside the point. A new docuseries looks at the rise of the foursome, from their starts in the industry in the 1980s to the decades when they didn’t “wake up for less than $10,000 a day,” as Evangelista infamously said. With archival footage and exclusive interviews from the four women, the documentary is more candid than you’d expect, especially seeing that they all double as executive producers. —Jensen Davis
