The Silk Road was a trade route that ran between Rome and China, connecting two great civilizations. Uzbekistan, a landlocked country in central Asia, was in the middle, and consequently a crossroads between five countries as well as between East and West. The ancient cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva—the names alone are full of mystery—brimmed with wealth, home to many masterworks, immaculately preserved. This exhibition holds 130 objects from 17 centuries. —Elena Clavarino
