The British playwright Stephen Beresford has set his new comedy, The Southbury Child, in a church. The show centers on the church’s vicar David Highland (played by Alex Jenning), who is beloved by his town. That is, until a family holding a funeral for their young daughter brings Disney balloons to the ceremony, and Highland, offended, tells them that “death is death. It isn’t balloons.” Despite a backlash from parishioners, Highland holds his position on the balloons. Was it a stance worth taking? Playing his wife is the always wonderful Phoebe Nicholls. Nicholas Hytner directs. —Jensen Davis
