Back in 1997, when she was in her ingenue years, Cate Blanchett played Nina in Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull. Nina is a country girl who gets her head turned by a visiting writer, Trigorin, who is the lover of Irina, a celebrated older actress. Blanchett now returns to the play, poised to reign in the role of Irina Nikolayevna Arkadina, the older actress. And so one grows up within a story. In this production, Nina is played by Emma Corrin, who was young Diana in The Crown. Trigorin, the man who seduces her, is Tom Burke. Thomas Ostermeier directs. —Laura Jacobs
