The Rescue

Three years later, the 2018 story of a boys soccer team trapped in an underwater cave in Thailand is a distant memory, stirred only by the occasional reference to Elon Musk’s bizarre tweets from that time. Now, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, the filmmakers behind the Academy Award-winning Free Solo, bring it all back with The Rescue. In Free Solo the draw was the camerawork—breathtaking views of California’s Yosemite as seen from the eyes of the documentary’s protagonist, the climber Alex Honnold. The Rescue is a different beast entirely, since the filmmakers weren’t there when the boys and their coach got stuck. Yet by masterfully pairing interviews with pieced-together footage of locals on the scene they breathe life into a rescue mission that had the world on tenterhooks. —J.V.
