The Reagans

There are some subjects—the royal family, Jackie Kennedy, Andy Warhol—for whom fascination does not wane, and the Reagans are fast approaching that status. Matt Tyrnauer (Valentino, Studio 54, Where’s My Roy Cohn?) adds fuel to this fire with a four-part documentary series positioning Ronald Reagan as a man who practiced dog-whistle politics. Indeed, Reagan is the ideal subject to follow Tyrnauer’s 2019 film on the infamous lawyer Roy Cohn. After defending Joe McCarthy and several mob bosses, Cohn took on Donald Trump as a client. As Tyrnauer told The New York Times, “The reason I wanted to make this was to show how Reagan in many ways paved the way for Trump—and the Republican party that has now fallen into Trump’s hands.” —J.V.
