From the river of gleaming blue bricks that line the grand entrance of the Petit Palais to the intricate formations of colored beads positioned throughout the interior and the courtyard of the museum, The Narcissus Theorem captures the intrigue of mirror images. Jean-Michel Othoniel’s first solo show since his retrospective at Centre Pompidou, in 2011, is an immersive experience that plays on the myth of Narcissus, a man who fell so in love with his reflection in a pool of water that he stared at it for the remainder of his life. Visitors follow Narcissus’s journey as they cross the river, proceed into the “Garden of Forbidden Fruits,” and then descend into the “Grotto of Narcissus.” The exhibit invites viewers to contemplate their own image as well as the reflection of the world around them. —Sonya Ribner
