A darling of the film festivals in Venice, Cannes, and New York, the director James Gray made his strongest appeal to popcorn viewers with Ad Astra, sending a space-suited Brad Pitt across the universe in search of his dad Donald Sutherland. Back on planet Earth, just before the pandemic, Gray broached opera for the first time with Mozart’s celestial Le Nozze di Figaro at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, in Paris. Now his production comes to Tinseltown, where it is sure to attract a red-carpet crowd. There’s serious musical talent in the mix—maestro James Conlon, first of all, plus vocal sparklers Janai Brugger, Ana María Martínez, Lucas Meachem, and more. Still, there’s a good chance that what people will go home buzzing about is the costumes by Christian Lacroix. —Matthew Gurewitsch
