“Nothingness is the basic core of what I aspire towards as a person at this point in my life,” Eddie Chacon told The FADER in 2023. As half of the neo soul duo Charles & Eddie, Chacon reached an early high when their debut single, “Would I Lie to You?,” achieved #1 on the U.K. Singles Chart for two weeks in 1992. His musical career fizzled out, however, and he spent the next couple of decades as a working photographer and creative director. In 2020, Chacon unexpectedly released the debut solo album Pleasure, Joy and Happiness, his first collaboration with producer John Carroll Kirby (Frank Ocean, Solange Knowles) and a gorgeously gentle revelation from an artist previously relegated to one-hit-wonder status. Chacon’s superlative 2023 follow-up Sundown only furthered his newfound reputation as a “low-key R&B legend” in pursuit of meditative musical “nothingness.” In January he released the terrific Lay Low, his first record with producer Nick Hakim. On March 15, the 61-year-old Chacon performs at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts. —Spike Carter
