The Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd, narrated by Tilda Swinton

She’s animated a wide range of roles—from voiceless rockstar to Russian aristocrat to Marvel’s Ancient One—but at the core Tilda Swinton exudes Britishness. She brings the accent and the mindset to The Living Mountain, a journey into Scotland’s arctic-alpine summits, the Cairngorms, that is second only to being there. Written by Nan Shepherd during W.W. II, the book remained in its manuscript form for more than 30 years, until 1977, when the writer Robert Macfarlane, author of the book’s introduction, came across it. “I read it, and was changed,” he said. —J.V.
